A little bit about Ollie – Ollie is a happy little dog, very affectionate and loving. He can be a bit nervous at first with people, but his whole body wiggles once he knows you. He likes nothing better than to snuggle up on the sofa beside you.

Energy Requirements:  Ollie needs regular interesting but quiet walks.

Training:  Ollie would benefit from ongoing training and likes to have a job to do. He responds to commands including sit, stay, lie down, leave, and bed. His recall needs some work. He walks nicely on the lead until he gets anxious when he becomes a bit frantic and will pull.

Ollie is quick to learn and engaging him in training exercises will increase his confidence and help build trust between him and the adopter.

Visiting the vet: Ollie has had his routine healthcheck and is fit and well. He is very nervous at the vets and needs some reassurance. He occasionally has sore ears and needs to have them kept clean.

Travelling:  Ollie travels well in the car, either in a crate or in the back with a dog guard.

Food: Ollie is currently fed twice a day on kibble and likes an occasional treat.

Sleep:  Ollie sleeps on the couch downstairs. Ollie does not like being crated. His foster family have been working on this and he has been spending short periods of time in the crate after walks to calm down.

Behavioural issues:  Following an incident 18 months ago when he was attacked by 2 large dogs, Ollie has become fearful and can be reactive to some other dogs, and his new owners will need to work on building his confidence.

He also has slight separation anxiety and will whine and bark when left alone.

Home needs: Ollie would suit a calm but reasonably active new home, in a quiet location with someone around most of the time. He needs an experienced home with someone who understands he is a nervous dog and that they cannot let strangers and dogs walk up to him in the street. He will be happiest on walks where he doesn’t get overwhelmed with other dogs. He would be best in a dog-free home. He will chase cats. No children under the age of 16.

Setting clear ‘boundaries’ will prevent Ollie from becoming confused and stressed due to not being sure how to behave and all desired behaviours should be acknowledged and rewarded.  They will also need to work on his confidence which will in turn help with the anxiety.  The new family will need some awareness of resource guarding and be able to differentiate between Ollie taking something for attention and taking something because he is feeling stressed.  As he can find walks stressful it is not desirable for the adopter to want to walk him for miles each day and they would need to understand that long walks would not benefit Ollie until he is more confident.

Ollie may need more than one visit before going home.

Ongoing support: Springer Rescue for Scotland will be available for any support with your new dog and can offer behavioural support in case of any problems that may arise on adopting a dog
