A little bit about Bracken – Although Bracken can be a nervous dog with time and patience he will grow to trust you and make a loving and friendly companion. He gets on with most dogs, however he is more comfortable around female dogs. He has lived on a farm and didn’t come into a lot of contact with many other dogs and children during his time there. He is adjusting well in foster enjoying a bit more interaction and company. He is content but will bark at visitors and passersby if he can see out of a window.
Energy Requirements: Bracken loves being outside. He is currently walked 4/5 times a day if the walks are medium/ small or 3/4 if he has one big walk. He can walk up to 8 miles but this would need to be little and often as he is not used to constant big walks. He gets overly excited when he knows he is going out so it can be a challenge to put his collar/ harness on, this is something he is working on in foster.
Training: Bracken pulls on the lead at first but quickly settles down. He has good recall and is trained to the whistle. He is easily distracted if there are interesting things to chase! As he is not used to walking by roads he can sometimes wander onto the road, he has made great improvements with this whilst in foster but it will need reinforced.
Visiting the vet: Bracken is up to date with his vaccinations and has been neutered while in foster.
Travelling: Bracken travels well in the car but is not used to long journeys, he will become restless after 45 mins to an hour. He is fine once you stop and let him out. He does not like to be left in the car.
Food: Bracken eats well and is a healthy weight. He is currently fed on Harringtons Adult dry food and a small amount of wet food twice a day. Bracken gets overly excited at feeding times and will jump up and down and stand on his hind legs. He will also counter surf whether you are there or not! Bracken begs for food during family mealtimes and will try a sneaky lick or bite off your plate. Bracken will have the occasional treat after a walk but as he is food orientated using treats to allow him to settle/ train or positive reinforcement works well.
Sleep: Bracken sleeps either downstairs on the couch or once he becomes more comfortable he will try and sleep on the bed with you.
Behavioural issues: Bracken can, randomly, bark at people when out, mostly men but not in an aggressive manner. This has been since being neutered however it is not a common occurrence and may be related to his healing and having restricted exercise during this time.
Home needs: Bracken would suit a quiet but active new home, preferably rural or semi-rural. Bracken can be left for up to 3 hours (max), he is currently used to this twice a week and therefore likes having someone around most of the time. He has lived with other dogs but will need careful introduction to any resident dog. He cannot be rehomed with a male dog but could live with an older female as he can become jealous/ protective once he settles. Equally he would suit being the only dog providing he has companionship.
Ongoing support: Springer Rescue for Scotland will be available for any support with your new dog and can offer behavioural support in case of any problems that may arise on adopting a dog
